5 things I wish every downsizer knew upfront.
After years of helping East Bay homeowners make this transition, here's the advice I find myself sharing again and again — I hope it helps you too!
1 Start with your lifestyle, not your stuff
Before you pack a single box, ask yourself: how do I want to live? Do you dream of walking to coffee shops in Rockridge, being close to family in Walnut Creek, or enjoying a quieter pace in Lafayette? Getting clear on that first makes every other decision so much easier — and more exciting.
2 Tour East Bay equity is a real superpower
If you've owned your home here for a while, chances are you've built up significant equity. That's a wonderful position to be in! Understanding what your home is worth today — and how to use those proceeds strategically — can open up options you might not have imagined. I'm always happy to walk through this together.
3 Give yourself more time than you think you need
Downsizing is as much emotional as it is logistical — and that's completely okay. A home full of memories takes time to sort through thoughtfully. I always encourage my clients to start the conversation early, even if the move is a year or two away. There's no rush, and planning ahead makes everything feel much more manageable.
4 Declutter in rounds, not all at once
Trying to tackle everything in one weekend is a recipe for overwhelm! Instead, go room by room and give yourself permission to do it gradually. A great rule of thumb: if it doesn't serve your next chapter, it's okay to let it go. Estate sale companies and donation centers in the East Bay are wonderfully helpful resources.
5 Lean on people who've done this before
You don't have to figure this out alone — and you shouldn't have to! From trusted moving specialists and estate sale experts to my network of East Bay lenders and attorneys, I love connecting my clients with the right people at the right time. Reach out anytime, even just to talk things through. That's truly what I'm here for.
